The story of “Kampar Golden Dragon Homestay”

“Kampar Golden Dragon Homestay” is located at the foot of hill in Taman Golden Dragon, old town Kampar. Taman Golden Dragon was formerly a luxurious residential area during the tin mining period in 20th Century. One of the famous tin miners, Eu Dong Shuan (the founder of Eu Yan Sang) used to have a luxurious villa in Taman Golden Dragon, but then he shifted away from the villa after half a decade.
Our homestay is one of the shop houses which was built in 1965 at the foot of hill in Taman Golden Dragon. But during the economic downturn, these shop houses were then converted into residential houses.
The layout of this house follows a typical shop house design. There is a spacious living room downstairs, which was actually an open space for business activities, and to welcome guests. The owner’s private space such as two bedrooms, kitchen, toilet and backyard are placed at the end of the house.

The former owners of the ground storey were Mr. Saw Teck Woo and Mrs. Saw, (or Madam Kong Ah Yeng). They raised their five children here since 1969, and this storeywas then sold to us in 2015. They spent 46 years life time in this house.
With the respect and appreciation of the old tradition of previous owners, we try to preserve some of the old furniture and decoration items for the memory of the olden days. We hope that our guests, especially the younger generation, do have the chance to experience our granny’s living style.
On the other hand, there is a separate staircase connecting another entrance to the upstairs. Living room, dining area, and four bedrooms (only three are open to our guests, but the other is reserved as the store room), are well decorated to ensure our guests a comfortable stay..
We actually stayed here for about five years before it was converted into a home stay. When we first moved in to this storey, we were very much impressed by its beautiful mosaic flooring and warm decoration. Then only we knew that such fine and excellent workmanship was actually from the former owner Mr. Koo, who was working in the construction field. We stayed in this house until our boy was born. We shifted out from here because we would like our kid to have more space, especially ground,  to play around.
We really love this house as it had provided us with wonderful life style and lots of memorable moments in Kampar. To pay it forward, we convert it into a home stay, hopefully it could provide a comfortable and pleasant place for every guest who visits Kampar.

If you are visiting Kampar for the first time, you are very welcome to stay here to experience the extraordinary surrounding in Golden Dragon hill. If you stayed in Kampar before and are coming back for a short trip, then you must visit the old shops and old houses to explore the specialty of Kampar. If you are a Kamparian looking for a place to host your guests, “Kampar Golden Dragon Homestay” would definitely be the best starting point for you to introduce your hometown to your loved ones.  No matter what reason it is, “Kampar Golden Dragon Homestay” will surely open your eyes to the simple and warm culture of this small but adorable town.
